Our take

Yakuza Kiwami II brings a classic narrative and vibrant world to the Switch 2, but at a premium price. While it's visually impressive for a handheld, you'll find some performance hiccups that can detract from the experience. If you’re already a fan of the series or looking for a deep story-rich game, it's worth considering. Just be ready for some technical quirks.

Returning to the world of Yakuza is a treat, especially with Kiwami II's narrative depth and character development. The Dragon Engine breathes life into every corner of this game, making streets, back alleys, and vibrant nightclubs feel alive. Combat flows smoothly, with new mechanics that enhance the action, though some performance issues can disrupt the otherwise engaging experience. Comparatively, this title stands strong against other open-world games like Ghost of Tsushima, especially in terms of character-driven storytelling. Side quests are a highlight, often more interesting than the main plot, which is a staple of the series. While the Switch 2 has its limitations, Kiwami II still manages to look great in handheld mode, even if it sometimes stutters. It’s a visual feast, but those hiccups can be frustrating.

Pros

  • sharp visuals that utilize the Dragon Engine well, enhancing environments and character models.
  • Engaging side quests that blend humor and drama, adding depth to the main story.
  • Fluid combat system with new Heat Actions that make battles feel dynamic and satisfying.

Cons

  • Performance issues occasionally lead to frame drops, especially in densely populated areas.
  • Load times can be longer than expected when transitioning between areas.
  • Some minor graphical glitches detract from an otherwise polished presentation.

Players control Kazuma Kiryu as he navigates a sprawling open world filled with main story missions and various side activities. The combat relies on a mix of melee attacks and Heat Actions, which trigger powerful moves when you build up your Heat gauge. Players can also engage in mini-games like karaoke or bowling, making the experience feel rich and diverse. Managing relationships with other characters and navigating the underworld adds layers to the narrative.

On Switch 2

Running on Switch 2, Yakuza Kiwami II is surprisingly well-optimized, though you'll notice frame drops in more chaotic scenes. Docked mode offers a better visual experience, but handheld play remains enjoyable for its portability. Controls are responsive, though navigating complex menus can feel cramped on the smaller screen.

Who it's for

This game is perfect for players who appreciate rich narratives and character-driven stories. If you enjoy open-world adventure games with a mix of action and mini-games, don't skip this. However, if you can't overlook performance issues, you might want to wait for patches or consider other titles.

About

Kazuma Kiryu thought his Tojo Clan days were behind him. He and the young girl in his care, Haruka Sawamura, have built a peaceful life from the ashes of conflict. All it took was a single gunshot to shatter that peace. Yukio Terada, the Fifth Chairman of the Tojo Clan, has been assassinated. With war on the horizon, the legendary Dragon of Dojima is pulled back into the world he wanted to leave behind. Kiryu must travel to Sotenbori, Osaka in an attempt to broker peace between the rival clans, but Ryuji Goda, known as the Dragon of Kansai, will stop at nothing to get his war. In this world, there can only be one dragon. Rebuilt from the ground up, Yakuza Kiwami 2 uses the Dragon Engine to update one of the series stand-out titles into a modern classic. The PC version includes all the enthusiast features you’ve come to expect: 4K resolution, unlocked framerates, customizable controls, and robust graphics options. Play fan favorite minigames including updated versions of the Cabaret Club simulator and Clan Creator, or check out all new additions like an arcade port of Virtual On, golf bingo, and Toylets. Also new to Kiwami 2 is the 'Majima Saga' which features Goro Majima in his own playable adventure revealing events that occur prior to the game.
