Our take

This re-imagining of a classic is a solid buy on the Switch 2, especially with the free performance patch. While it doesn’t break new ground, it captures the charm of the original with modern tweaks. If you haven't played it yet, this version makes the trip to Koholint worth it.

Link's Awakening is a faithful remake that successfully integrates nostalgic elements with modern gameplay. The visuals are a standout, resembling a toy-like world with vibrant colors that come alive on the Switch 2 screen. Controls are precise, making combat and platforming intuitive, although the puzzles sometimes don't challenge seasoned players. Comparatively, it feels less expansive than recent entries in the franchise, but the charm remains undeniable. The new Chamber Dungeon mode adds some much-needed depth, allowing for creativity and replayability. The free performance patch helps smooth out frame rate issues, although some moments can still show stutters. Overall, it’s a polished experience but remember, it still leans heavily into its retro roots.

Pros

  • Charming visuals with a delightful diorama aesthetic that pops on the Switch 2's display
  • Smooth controls with responsive touch mechanics that streamline interacting with the environment
  • The quality of life improvements, like a map feature that tweaks the original's navigation issues

Cons

  • Some puzzles can feel overly simplistic compared to newer titles like Breath of the Wild
  • Soundtrack feels limited; remixes of the original tunes aren’t as expansive as expected
  • The performance patch improved frame rates, but occasional dips still occur during intense moments

Players control Link as he explores Koholint Island, collecting items, battling enemies, and solving puzzles. Key mechanics include the ability to lift objects and use various tools like the Pegasus Boots and Hookshot. Dungeons provide classic Zelda challenges with unique bosses and item rewards. The added Chamber Dungeon mode allows players to create custom dungeon layouts, expanding replayability.

On Switch 2

On the Switch 2, Link's Awakening runs crisply, benefiting from the enhanced hardware. Handheld play is just as engaging, with touch controls making item management easier. Docking it doesn’t compromise performance, but you'll notice minor frame drops in chaotic scenes.

Who it's for

This game is perfect for players who appreciate retro titles and want a nostalgic trip with some modern enhancements. If you prefer deep, complex puzzles and expansive worlds, you might want to look elsewhere.
