Our take

Super Mario Galaxy on Switch 2 is a stellar port, especially with the performance patch. For $39.99, it gives you a chance to relive a classic platformer with better frame rates and load times. While there are a few minor quirks, it’s hard to ignore the charm and creativity packed into each level.

Navigating through Super Mario Galaxy feels like riding a wave of nostalgia, but this version feels tighter with the performance patch. The gravity mechanics are still a joy, allowing you to leap between planets in choreographed chaos. Controls are mostly smooth, though some of the Wii motion-based mini-games don’t translate perfectly, making those moments feel clunky. Visually, the game shows its age, but the vibrant art style still pops on the Switch 2, albeit with some noticeable texture downgrades in comparison to modern titles. The balance of platforming and puzzle-solving keeps the gameplay engaging throughout. Overall, while it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it serves as a reminder of why Galaxy was celebrated in the first place.

Pros

  • Improved frame rates for smoother gameplay
  • Shorter load times compared to the original
  • Controls feel responsive, even without the Wii Remote

Cons

  • Some mini-games feel less precise without motion controls
  • Missing certain Wii features that enhanced the original experience
  • Visuals show age despite some upgrades

You navigate gravity-defying worlds filled with imaginative landscapes and tricky platforming. Collect Star Bits, activate power-ups, and solve environmental puzzles to unlock new areas. The gravity mechanic is central, allowing you to traverse planets in unique ways. Boss battles and challenges punctuate the journey, keeping gameplay fresh.

On Switch 2

On Switch 2, Super Mario Galaxy runs at a steady frame rate, drastically reducing load times compared to its previous console. The handheld mode feels comfortable, though it lacks the precision of the Wii controls, especially in mini-games that rely on motion. Docked mode works well with its vibrant graphics, and the improved performance patch is evident throughout the experience.

Who it's for

This is perfect for long-time fans of platformers who want to revisit a classic. However, if you're new to Mario or prefer more modern mechanics, you might find it lacking.
