At $35.99, Sid Meier's Civilization VII is a decent buy for fans of strategy games, especially with its Founders Edition offering considerable post-launch content. But if you're not invested in the franchise or don't enjoy turn-based strategy, you might want to wait for updates and patches. The Switch 2 version provides solid performance but might not meet every player's expectations right out of the gate.
Civilization VII brings the beloved franchise back to our screens with a robust turn-based strategy experience. The graphics are simplified for the Switch 2, but they still do a fair job at conveying the essence of exploration and warfare. Controls are adapted nicely for the platform, allowing for easy navigation through menus and map interactions, which makes it a breeze to get into. The Founders Edition gives players access to rich post-launch content, but the initial launch does feel a bit bare without full multiplayer support. Compared to previous entries, this iteration has made a commendable leap towards accessibility, yet it suffers from some performance hiccups in the late game. If you enjoy games like XCOM but want to manage civilizations instead of squads, this title will pique your interest.

Players build and expand their empires through turns, managing resources, diplomacy, and military. The game features Civics Trees that let you customize your civilization in unique ways. You’ll also engage in real-time strategy elements when navigating combat situations. Each game can drastically change based on the civilization you choose and the randomly generated maps.

Running on Switch 2, Civilization VII provides a smooth experience overall, though expect some frame rate drops in more complex scenarios. Docked mode looks decent, but handheld play really works well due to the touch controls, allowing for quick navigation on the move. The hardware does enhance the experience with improved load times over previous console generations.
