Our take
At $29.99, Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac isn't exactly a steal, especially given its age and simple mechanics. While nostalgic fans may find value in the updated visuals and content, others might feel the gameplay doesn’t hold up against modern platformers. It's a decent trip down memory lane but lacks the depth or innovation found in newer titles.
Navigating Pac-Land feels like stepping into a time capsule, though the charm wears thin quickly. The updated graphics look nice, but they can’t mask the repetitive nature of the gameplay. Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac leans heavily on nostalgia, with a simple control scheme that doesn't always respond as you'd hope. Performance on Switch 2 is solid; it runs smoothly at 60 frames per second in both handheld and docked modes. However, the level design doesn't feel modernized, leaving you longing for something deeper. Compared to the likes of Super Mario Odyssey or even indie hits like Celeste, this game falls short in engagement and innovation.
Pros
- Updated visuals make the environments pop and feel fresh
- Includes DLC content, adding a bit of extra value
- Retro charm appeals to longtime fans of the series
Cons
- Gameplay feels dated and simplistic compared to modern platformers
- Controls can feel a bit stiff, especially during platforming sections
- No major improvements in level design or mechanics from the original
Players control Pac-Man as he navigates various levels across Pac-Land, collecting fruit and dodging ghosts. You can run, jump, and use unique abilities like the Pac-Dash to tackle obstacles. The game features classic platforming challenges, including bouncing on trampolines and skating on ice, but lacks the variety found in other recent platformers.
On Switch 2
On the Switch 2, Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac runs smoothly with minimal load times, which is a plus. The controls are responsive in handheld mode, but the lack of complexity in mechanics makes you wish for more advanced platforming options.
Who it's for
This is for dedicated fans of the original Pac-Man World and those who enjoy retro-style platformers. If you're looking for challenging gameplay or innovative mechanics, you might want to skip this one.
