Our take
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe remains a solid choice for fans of classic platforming on Switch 2, especially with the free performance patch. However, at $60, it feels a bit pricey for a game that's essentially a port. If you haven't played it before, the cooperative fun and extra content can justify the cost. But if you’ve already explored the Wii U version, you might want to hold off.
The platforming action here feels familiar yet satisfying, with tight controls that are responsive, even in handheld mode. The graphics, while not groundbreaking, retain a vibrant charm that works well on the Switch 2's display. The free performance patch has improved load times and frame rates, but occasional hiccups can disrupt the flow. Compared to recent indie platformers, it doesn't push any boundaries; think Celeste's precision versus Mario's more forgiving nature. However, the inclusion of multiplayer makes it a great pick for family game nights. The levels do have a repetitiveness to them, especially if you've played the original releases, making it less appealing for returning players.
Pros
- Dual game package offers variety with New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U
- Co-op play is easy to jump into with one Joy-Con
- New playable characters like Toadette provide fresh mechanics for younger players
Cons
- Price tag feels steep for a port of older games
- Some levels can feel repetitive after extended play
- Performance improvements are nice, but occasional frame drops still occur
Players run, jump, and power-up through levels filled with classic Mario enemies and obstacles. With the addition of characters like Toadette and Nabbit, gameplay encourages cooperative strategies. There are 164 levels to tackle, alongside bonus content such as hint galleries and reference videos for new players. The game also incorporates a simple control scheme, which makes it accessible for younger audiences.
On Switch 2
On Switch 2, the game runs smoothly, especially in docked mode where visuals pop nicely on larger screens. Controls are responsive whether you're playing handheld or with Joy-Con, enhancing the overall experience. The performance patch addresses some previous issues, but minor frame drops can still be a nuisance during chaotic multiplayer moments.
Who it's for
Perfect for families and casual gamers looking for a fun platformer, especially those introducing kids to gaming. If you’re a seasoned player who has already completed the Wii U version, you might want to pass unless you’re eager for a nostalgia trip.
