Our take
At $29.99, this port doesn't fully justify its price. While it has charm and nostalgia, performance issues and dated mechanics hold it back. Consider waiting for a sale or a patch that improves stability before committing.
Jumping back into Little Big Adventure feels like a nostalgic trip, but it quickly becomes clear that the game struggles to match modern expectations. The charming art style is preserved, but the frame rate dips can jar you out of the experience, especially when exploring the vibrant and detailed environments. Some puzzles are well-designed, yet the clunky controls can ruin the flow, particularly during platforming sections. Compared to contemporary titles like Ori and the Blind Forest, this game feels dated. Dialogues are humorous and engaging, but the extensive text-heavy scenes may drag for those seeking action. Overall, it's a delightful journey marred by technical hiccups that prevent it from shining as brightly on the Switch 2.
Pros
- Delightfully quirky art style that captures the original's charm.
- Engaging narrative filled with humor and quirky characters.
- Solid puzzle mechanics that require real thought to solve.
Cons
- Terrible frame rates in certain areas, especially during crowded scenes.
- Controls feel clunky compared to modern standards, making platforming frustrating.
- Lack of quality-of-life features, like improved save systems or map options.
You control Twinsen, who must escape from his cell and unravel a conspiracy against his world. The game combines exploration, puzzle-solving, and some light combat. You'll interact with a variety of characters and complete quests that often require clever thinking. Expect to burn some brainpower on tricky environmental puzzles that can stump you for a while.
On Switch 2
On the Switch 2, the game runs poorly in areas with high visual fidelity, dropping frames and causing frustration. Handheld mode offers a decent experience but still suffers from the same performance issues; docked mode doesn't improve much. The Joy-Con controls can feel imprecise, which complicates the already tricky platforming sections.
Who it's for
Fans of retro games and nostalgic experiences will find value here, but newcomers might want to look elsewhere for a smoother gameplay experience. If you're not into old-school mechanics and pixelated charm, this may not be your cup of tea.
