Our take
At $59.99, Dynasty Warriors Origins feels like a hard sell, especially for those who aren’t die-hard fans. While the nostalgia from the soundtrack might entice veterans, the gameplay fails to innovate in meaningful ways. Unless you crave another hack-and-slash grind with little fresh content, give this one a pass.
Dynasty Warriors Origins sticks closely to its roots, which isn’t necessarily a good thing. The gameplay feels dated, with missions that quickly become repetitive, offering little incentive to push through. The character roster is a nostalgic trip, but the combat lacks the depth seen in more modern action RPGs like Hades or even newer entries in the genre. Performance on the Switch 2 also shows its limitations, with frame rates dropping during intense segments, making it frustrating when the action gets heavy. The graphics are serviceable but don’t push the hardware, and the environments seem uninspired. If you’re looking for fresh mechanics or an engaging narrative, you’ll be disappointed here.
Pros
- Comprehensive soundtrack with 191 tracks that fans will appreciate
- Classic hack-and-slash mechanics that are reliable
- Playable characters drawn from earlier titles provide nostalgia
Cons
- Frustratingly repetitive missions with little variety
- Performance dips to 30 FPS in hectic battles, which can hinder enjoyment
- Lack of meaningful new features to justify the price
You’ll tackle hordes of enemies using basic combos and special abilities unique to each character. The game features an open battlefield design, allowing players to roam and complete missions at will. However, expect plenty of button-mashing and not much more in terms of strategy or depth.
On Switch 2
On the Switch 2, Dynasty Warriors Origins runs well in handheld mode but suffers from noticeable frame drops in docked play during chaotic battles. The controls feel responsive, but the lack of refined combat mechanics makes it tough to get excited about the experience, regardless of the format.
Who it's for
This game is for long-time fans of the Dynasty Warriors series who appreciate nostalgia and don’t mind repetitive gameplay. If you’re new to the franchise or looking for innovative mechanics, you might want to skip this one.
