Our take
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is a solid buy for platforming fans, especially those who missed it on the Wii or 3DS. With the price set at $59.99, it’s a bit steep, but the new visuals and extra levels offer some value. Still, you’re looking at a game that may be more nostalgic than revolutionary.
The gameplay is a nostalgic trip, perfectly capturing the essence of the original while updating it for modern play. The HD visuals look great on the Switch 2, and the vibrant colors really shine in handheld mode, though frame drops can mar the experience during hectic moments. While the co-op mode is a blast, it’s a shame the mechanics feel a bit dated compared to newer titles. The added levels from the 3DS version help keep things fresh, but they don’t fundamentally change the experience. If you loved the original, this port is a nice way to relive those memories, just be wary of the occasional performance hiccup. Overall, it’s a fun ride through the jungle, though it doesn’t push the envelope as much as some more recent platformers.
Pros
- Visually enhanced in HD, making the colorful worlds pop on the Switch 2
- Includes additional levels from the 3DS version, adding replay value
- Two-player local play lets friends join in on the fun, perfect for cooperative sessions
Cons
- Performance patch is free, but it doesn't completely eliminate frame drops during intense sections
- Some mechanics feel outdated, especially compared to newer platformers like Celeste
- Difficulty scaling may make it too easy for seasoned players
You’ll stomp enemies, swing from vines, and blast through barrels in an action-packed platforming experience. The game features 80 levels, where you can collect bananas and dodge the Tiki Tak Tribe’s minions. Players can toggle between standard and reduced difficulty settings, along with engaging in local co-op for double the fun. Special mechanics like Diddy’s Barrel Jet and DK’s ground pound keep the gameplay dynamic.
On Switch 2
On the Switch 2, expect improved visuals and a smoother experience for the most part, but the occasional frame drop during intense moments can be distracting. Controls are responsive, whether in handheld or docked mode, which enhances accessibility for both solo and co-op gameplay. The performance patch is a nice touch, but it doesn't completely eradicate the game's occasional rough edges.
Who it's for
This game is perfect for fans of classic platformers who want to relive Donkey Kong's adventures. However, those seeking modern platforming mechanics or top-tier performance might want to look elsewhere.
