Our take
At $19.99, Braid: Anniversary Edition offers a nostalgic trip worth taking, but only if you're a fan of methodical puzzles and indie charm. The new visuals and audio commentary provide a fresh spin, but if you've played the original recently, the enhancements might not feel essential. All in all, it’s a great revisit for newcomers and old fans alike, but it might not justify the cost for everyone.
This updated version of Braid stays true to the original while enhancing the visuals with beautifully repainted graphics. The time-based puzzles are just as rewarding now as they were in 2008, demanding a thoughtful approach to each challenge. The audio commentary is a standout feature, providing insights from the creator that deepen the experience, although it might not appeal to everyone. However, players who’ve recently completed the original may find the new content insufficient. On Switch 2, the controls are responsive, making it easy to manipulate time with precision. Unfortunately, during moments of intense action, the performance can lag, which detracts from the otherwise polished presentation. Compared to other indie titles like Celeste, Braid feels a bit slower-paced, focusing heavily on cerebral challenges rather than rapid platforming.
Pros
- Gorgeous hand-painted artwork reimagines the original's visuals
- In-depth audio commentary adds layers for those interested in game design
- Clever time manipulation mechanics keep the puzzles engaging
Cons
- The core gameplay remains unchanged, which could feel dated for some
- Performance dips in intense moments, leading to occasional stutter
- Pricey for a remaster with minimal new gameplay content
Players navigate through intricately designed worlds using unique time manipulation mechanics. You can rewind time, pause it, and affect the environment to solve puzzles. Collecting jigsaw pieces scattered throughout each level adds to the challenge. The game is structured around a simple narrative of searching for a princess, but it's the puzzle-solving that takes center stage.
On Switch 2
Performance on the Switch 2 has its ups and downs. While most of the time, the visuals pop beautifully in handheld mode, there are instances where frame rates drop, particularly in more complicated areas. Controls are tight and responsive, making it feel natural whether you're playing docked or on the go.
Who it's for
This edition is ideal for players who appreciate narrative-driven puzzle games and artistic indie experiences. However, if you prefer fast-paced action or have recently played the original, it might be best to skip this upgrade.
